Best all-mountain skis 2026

Article available in French

All-mountain skis, also known as versatile skis, are ideal for skiers looking to explore both groomed trails and off-piste terrain.

They offer the flexibility needed to venture into a variety of terrains (on-piste, off-piste) and handle all types of snow (groomed, powder, tracked-out, hardpack).

All-mountain skis are a middle ground between powder-specific skis and short-radius piste skis. They cover a range that sits somewhere between freeride and traditional on-piste skiing.

How To Choose Your all-mountain skis

  1. Versatility
  2. Maneuverability
  3. Stability
  4. Off-Piste
  5. Level
  6. Waist width

Versatility

All-mountain skis are designed to provide optimal performance on different types of terrain and snow conditions. The degree of versatility is therefore the main criterion to consider. A good all-mountain ski must be able to transition smoothly from groomed snow to off-piste, while offering a safe and fluid gliding experience. Indeed, not all all-mountain skis have the same level of versatility!

There are 3 brackets for versatility

  • Low
Suitable for skiers who prioritize either performance on groomed slopes with tight and responsive turns, or floatation in powder and stability at high speeds off-piste. These skis are specialized for specific conditions, offering limited versatility in mixed conditions.
  • Average
Suitable for skiers who spend more time off-piste but still want good performance on groomed runs. A good compromise for those who want stability at high speeds with some floatation in powder.
  • Big
Ideal for skiers who regularly alternate between groomed trails and off-piste, offering an excellent balance between maneuverability and stability. These skis provide optimal performance in various snow conditions, including powder and hard snow.

Maneuverability

Maneuverability refers to how easily a skier can control and turn their skis. Maneuverable skis are responsive and allow for precise turns, which is crucial in varied and changing environments like those encountered with all-mountain skis. Maneuverability is both different from and complementary to « versatility. » In the case of all-mountain skis, maneuverability particularly refers to the stiffness of the ski and the weight of the ski.

There are 3 brackets for maneuverability

  • Weak
Stiffer skis, requiring more technique for turns, suitable for more advanced skiers.
  • Average
Skis offering a good balance between stability and responsiveness, suitable for intermediate skiers.
  • High
Light and easy-to-maneuver skis, perfect for experienced skiers.

Stability

The stability of skis influences the confidence and safety felt by the skier, especially at high speeds or on rough terrain. Stable skis reduce vibrations and provide better grip, which is crucial for maintaining control.

There are 3 brackets for stability

  • Weak
Lighter and more flexible skis, which may be less stable at high speeds or on uneven terrain.
  • Average
Skis balancing lightness and sturdiness, suitable for the majority of skiers.
  • Raised
Heavy and stiff skis, excellent for speed and rough terrain.

Off-Piste

Off-piste behavior is crucial if one seeks to venture away from groomed trails and enjoy varied terrains: powder, forest, bumps, chopped snow… A high-performance all-mountain ski in off-piste conditions will confirm the ski’s ability to be used in a true mixed-use setting, and not just on the slopes.

There are 3 brackets for off-piste

  • weak
    Track-oriented, occasional outings off-piste.
  • average
    Handles off-piste well, good all-rounder.
  • good
Good all-rounder, even very oriented towards freeride.

Level

A ski that is too stiff or technical for a beginner becomes a nightmare. Conversely, an experienced skier on a model that is too soft or basic will quickly become frustrated by the lack of precision or performance. Make sure to choose a ski that matches your current level, not the one you hope to reach by the end of the season!

There are 4 brackets for level

  • Beginner
Discover skiing, seek stability and ease of handling.
  • Intermediate
Track control, starts off-piste, wants to progress effectively.
  • Advanced
At ease everywhere, seeks precision and versatility at a good level.
  • Expert
Total mastery, technical skiing, fast and committed on all terrains.

Waist width

The waist width is the width of the skis between the two bindings (underfoot): the toe piece and the heel piece. This waist width is measured in millimeters. Often, ski models have a name ending with a number. This number is generally the waist width of the ski given in millimeters! For example, the ski « Dynastar M tour 99 » has a waist width of 99 mm! The wider the width, the more the skis float easily on powder snow, but the slower they are to turn on groomed runs. As always, it’s a matter of compromise. It is difficult to have the best of both worlds, but all-mountain skis attempt to combine comfort on-piste and efficiency off-piste by positioning themselves at the boundary of both practices.

There are 3 brackets for waist width

  • versatile
from 3.35 to 3.74 inches at the base
  • large
from 3.74 to 4.13 inches at the base
  • large/freeride
from 4.1 to 4.5 inches at the base

Your questions about all-mountain skis

What is an all-mountain ski?

Simply put, an all-mountain ski is a versatile ski that allows you to enjoy both groomed runs and off-piste terrain. It’s responsive and comfortable on hardpack while also making powder skiing easier, thanks to wider sidecuts than traditional skis and a profile that handles both deep snow and piste with ease.

Why not buy an all-mountain ski?

All-mountain skis are jacks-of-all-trades with a lot of versatility.

Yes, but being good everywhere also means not being the best anywhere.
If you’re looking for a ski that excels in one specific discipline like carving, powder, or freestyle, then you’d be better off choosing a ski made specifically for that use.

Owning two pairs of skis is often worth it, and you won’t regret it.

What are the best brands for all-mountain skis?

All-mountain skis came from the evolution of both freeride and piste skiing, and from skiers’ desire to explore off-piste terrain without changing gear.

Brands quickly saw a gap in the market, and the first all-mountain skis emerged with heavy marketing support. Today, these ranges have matured and truly offer undeniable advantages.

Having a single pair of skis that can handle nearly everything is a strong selling point, especially for casual and even regular skiers.

The big names in the industry were the first to invest in this new category and remain leaders when it comes to all-mountain skis. Rossignol, Salomon, and Volkl, to name a few, are solid choices. A few smaller brands have also tried to enter this more mainstream segment, though it’s often harder for them since they usually focus on more niche categories like freestyle, freeride, or ski touring.

What’s the difference between all-mountain skis and piste skis?

All-mountain skis are slightly wider than traditional piste skis, and their shape usually includes rockers, which are more flexible sections of the ski. This makes them better suited to off-piste terrain with improved float, while still staying solid on groomed runs thanks to rockers that are more forgiving of mistakes.

Can you do freestyle skiing with all-mountain skis?

Yes, technically you can do freestyle skiing with any ski. Remember, the first freestylers used straight skis that were 2 meters long.
That said, all-mountain skis are less than ideal for park riding or jumps. If freestyle is your goal, check whether your skis have raised tails — that feature makes skiing switch (backward) a lot easier.

Why choose a versatile ski (or all-mountain ski)?

The advantage of all-mountain skis is that they can take you just about anywhere. They adapt well to different terrain, snow conditions, and skill levels. For casual skiers who hit the slopes fewer than 15 days a year, they’ve become the new default.

Having just one pair at home, or one rental that can do everything, is a major convenience.
However, if you’re more demanding and want multiple skis for specific styles of skiing, then you probably don’t need a versatile ski. A combination of piste skis and freeride skis will be more effective.

Are all-mountain skis suitable for beginners?

Yes, all-mountain skis are great for beginners. They are both versatile and forgiving, and also playful. This makes them accessible while still offering good performance.

Ski length is more important than type when you’re starting out — especially if you’re torn between classic piste skis and more versatile all-mountain ones.

What size all-mountain skis should I get?

All-mountain skis are go-anywhere skis for riders looking for comfort and versatility. Ideally, choose a ski that’s slightly shorter than your height. Anywhere from 35 cm to 10 cm shorter is a good range.

Of course, you can adjust based on personal preference. Shorter skis are easier to handle, making them great for beginners. But that agility comes at the cost of performance as you improve, so it’s worth reassessing your ski length as your skills evolve.

You can also use an online ski size calculator. It will suggest a length based on your body type and ability level.

Finally, here is a general size chart for all-mountain skis. Remember, these are only recommendations, not hard rules.
